Business Website Checklist: 20 Things Every Small Business Website Needs
A practical checklist for small business websites in India – speed, mobile design, SEO basics, trust signals, enquiry forms, security and analytics.
Your website is often the first place a customer meets your business – usually on a phone, often after a Google search. A good site answers their questions quickly, earns their trust and makes it easy to contact you. A weak one quietly sends them to a competitor.
Use this checklist to review your current website, or as a brief when you plan a new one. Each point is simple; together they make the difference between a site that looks nice and a site that brings in enquiries.
Speed and mobile experience
- It works perfectly on mobile. Most visitors in India browse on their phones. Text must be readable without zooming and buttons easy to tap.
- It loads fast. Google's Core Web Vitals treat a Largest Contentful Paint of 2.5 seconds or less as "good". Compress images, avoid heavy sliders and use modern hosting.
- It feels stable. The page should not jump while loading (Cumulative Layout Shift of 0.1 or less is "good").
- It responds quickly to taps. Interaction to Next Paint of 200 ms or less is "good" – heavy scripts and too many plugins are the usual cause of slow sites.
Clear message and structure
- A clear headline above the fold that says what you do, for whom and where – for example "Website and app development for businesses across Tamil Nadu".
- One page per service. A separate page for each main service helps customers find what they need and helps Google rank you for each service.
- Simple navigation with no more than six or seven main menu items.
- A strong call to action on every page – "Get a free quote", "Book a visit" or "Chat on WhatsApp".
Trust signals
- Real contact details: phone, WhatsApp, email and full address – the same everywhere online.
- About page that shows the people and story behind the business.
- Examples of your work and genuine customer reviews (never fake ones).
- Privacy policy and terms, especially if you collect personal details through forms. India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act makes handling personal data responsibly more important than ever.
- HTTPS everywhere – the padlock in the browser is now a basic expectation.
SEO foundations
- A unique title and meta description for every page – titles around 60 characters, descriptions around 150–160.
- One H1 heading per page and a logical structure of H2 and H3 headings.
- An XML sitemap submitted to Google Search Console, and a robots.txt file that does not block important pages.
- Structured data (schema.org) for your business, services, FAQs and articles, so Google understands your content.
- Descriptive image alt text and meaningful URLs such as /services/website-development.

Leads and measurement
- Short enquiry forms that ask only what you need, plus a WhatsApp button. Every enquiry should reach you instantly by email or WhatsApp.
- Analytics from day one. Connect Google Analytics 4 and Google Search Console so you can see which pages and searches bring customers.
Bonus: things to avoid
- Auto-playing videos and pop-ups that appear before the visitor has read anything.
- Text inside images – Google cannot read it and it is unreadable on small screens.
- Copying content from other websites; it hurts trust and rankings.
- Launching and forgetting. A site that is never updated slowly loses rankings.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a small business website cost in India?
A well-built business website typically costs more than a template site but far less than a custom web app. The price depends on the number of pages, design, content writing, integrations and whether you need e-commerce. Ask for an itemised quote so you can compare like with like.
Should I use WordPress or a custom-built website?
WordPress is a good fit for content-heavy sites that non-technical staff update often. Custom-built sites (for example with Next.js) are faster, more secure and easier to extend with forms, bookings and integrations. The right choice depends on who will update the site and what it needs to do.
How often should I update my website?
Review key pages at least every few months, keep contact details and services current, and add helpful content regularly. Search engines and customers both reward sites that stay fresh and accurate.
